Full Cord and Billy Strings Reunite for new single “Hubris Came To Town”
Michigan roots run deep in the upcoming collaboration between Full Cord and Billy Strings, as the longtime friends and fellow musicians prepare to release the new single “Hubris Came To Town” on May 29. The track marks the first release from a special two-song 7-inch vinyl record set to debut at the Ionia Freak Fair on August 28.
“Hubris Came To Town” captures the grit, spirit, and chemistry that can only come from decades of shared stages, late-night picking sessions, and a mutual love for Michigan’s rich musical tradition. Featuring Billy Strings on guitar alongside Full Cord’s unmistakable blend of bluegrass originality and keen songwriting, the single serves as both a celebration of friendship and a testament to the musical community that shaped them all.
Long before international tours and sold-out arenas, the members of Full Cord and Billy Strings were crossing paths throughout Michigan’s jam circles, festivals, and small-town stages. That lifelong connection remains at the heart of this release, a project built not only on musical talent, but on years of camaraderie, respect, and shared history.
"Hubris Came to Town" feat. Billy Strings, is a song that has many inspirations; its structure and harmonic interest are similar to a song I wrote 11 years ago called Downtown. The chorus has the vocal harmonies, chords and darkness from the likeness of System of a Down while the jam section is lightly inspired by Bela Fleck's Charm School and rhythmically by the second movement of Shostakovich's 10th string quartet. The lyric content could be construed as age-old rhetoric about anyone in your life that has these certain qualities. This is the kind of music I like to write for bluegrass in an effort to put my own stamp on the genre with (primarily) harmonic interest and edgy lyrics. With Billy Strings and the band absolutely ripping throughout the entire song, it now has the aggressive demeanor I intended. All the guys in Full Cord made this version of the song what it is and I am very pleased with the track."" - Brian Oberlin

Lyrics

Hubris came to town
Although it's trite, you lit the lights
Of your impossible dream
Tell your story loud
To many eyes, you mesmerize
And bid the core of a scheme

Master of your own world
1. Heartless view 2. Simply amused 3. Aim to bemuse
Lies inside the one hand
The other a fuse

No more reaching out
You make the play, most every day
It's just a matter of pride
Standing on your word
To the wary and wise, you ill advise
In hopes that we will collide

Forward we must go
And not fall prey, or led astray
By the ones who connive
Ascend from lower ground
A renegade, with a sharp blade
Do what it takes to survive
